Shelton, Charles

Charles Shelton was born in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1938, attended Owensboro High School where he earned a football scholarship to a local college. He married his childhood sweetheart Miriam Volman and they had five children.

Charles entered the Air Force and became a pilot, he and his family were stationed in Okanwa, Japan in 1965 where he would serve tours in Vietnam. His missions involved flying reconnaissance over Laos. On one of these missions Captain Shelton was filming some caves in Laos that were suspected of being prisoner of war camps.

Cromwell, John Philip

The most senior naval officer to win the Congressional Medal of Honor was Captain John Cromwell. Born on Sept. 11 th 1901 in Henry, Illinois he rose to the rank of Captain in the U.S. Navy. He was Commander of a Submarine Coordinated Attack Group, commonly called a wolf-pack, and had his flag aboard the USS Sculpin (SS-191). As a group Commander Capt. Cromwell was privy to the use of ULTRA and its importance in decoding the Japanese Naval Codes and how the use of these codes was defining the strategy of the Pacific War. In addition, he was in possession of some of the details of the impending invasion of Saipan. Sculpin, on patrol north of Truk, was to combine her efforts with those of Searaven and Apagon to deliver a coordinated attack on the Japanese forces in and around the Gilberts.

Inouye, Daniel

U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye was born on September 7th 1924 on the Island of Honolulu in Hawaii. The young Daniel Inouye attended public school and worked parking cars at the Honolulu Stadium. He also made extra money by giving haircuts to his fellow students. Most of his spare time was spent on his flock of homing pigeons, his postage stamp collection, and collecting parts for his crystal radio set as well as his chemistry set.

On that fateful day of December 7, 1941 came the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The 17-year-old Daniel was immediately on the scene to handle civilian casualties. He had taken medical aid training and was quickly pressed into service to head up a litter team, he recalls seeing a lot of blood, and not going home for a week.

Walker, Mary (Dr.)

Mary Edwards Walker was born on November 26, 1832 Oswego Town, New York. Mary’s father was a farmer and a self-taught doctor. Mary had the desire to enter the medical profession and to become a doctor like her father, and to that end graduated from Syracuse Medical College in 1853. She practiced medicine in Rome, New York, although the country was not quite ready to accept a woman doctor.

Kisters, Gerry H.

Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Gerry Kisters joined the U.S. Army and was assigned the 2nd Armored Division and rose to the rank of sergeant. Sgt. Kisters was serving in Italy during World War II near Gagliano, Sicily in February of 1943 with a detachment of one officer and 9 enlisted men. The troop was advancing ahead of the leading elements of US troops to fill a large crater in the only available vehicle route through Gagliano.
